How to learn how to do something - learn by doing

We learn through experience, by doing.  How can we learn how to do something in a systematic, results oriented manner? 

1. List clearly the topic you wish to learn or understand - write it down, think about it
2. Forget what you already know, or at least suspend previous notions about the topic - otherwise you will have a closed mind and you may not be able to add knowledge to your knowledge base
3. Take time to learn about your topic - read books, use the Internet, talk to experts
4. Figure out how you can experience that which you wish to understand
5. Initiate action that allows you to begin experiencing your chosen topic
6. During your experiencing, gain an understanding of the topic through your personal experience, don't establish a set of beliefs, just seek to understand the basic principles, this will allow you to expand on the experience, to increase your knowledge base, to unleash your creativity, and to make new discoveries
7. You now have new knowledge, new reality, something you won't soon forget
